Achtergrondinformatie:

Carbon and Nitrogen Containing Samples
Soils and sediments contain a large variety of organic materials ranging from simple sugars and carbohydrates to the more
complex proteins, fats, waxes, and organic acids. Important characteristics of the organic matter include their ability to
form water-soluble and water insoluble complexes with metal ions and hydrous oxides; interact with clay minerals and bind
particles together; sorb and desorb both naturally-occurring and anthropogenically-introduced organic compounds; absorb and
release plant nutrients; and hold water in the soil environment.
Waste treatment processes end up with a sludge containing significant amount of carbon and nitrogen. It requires either to be
disposed, landfilled or further processed to get use of its energy and chemical content.
Landfills are well insulated areas where wastes are disposed.
Ground water resources need to be protected from any contamination by fertilizers and pesticides in agricultural use and
leachate from the landfills. Any carbon containing material can be considered as a source of chemical input for production of organic compounds and also for energy production. Achieving sustainable water quality is one of very essential concerns from many respects, including hygiene and environment. Carbon and nitrogen are two of the parameters indicating quality of water.
Then, determination of carbon and sometimes nitrogen content becomes essential in qualification of any one of the mentioned
topics. Carbon and nitrogene content is contributed by compounds of organic and inorganic nature.

TC-TOC-IC-TN Analysis
The basic principle for the quantitation of total organic carbon relies on the destruction of organic matter present in the
sample matrix. The destruction of the organic matter can be performed chemically or via heat at elevated temperatures. All
carbon forms in the sample are converted into CO2 which is then measured directly and converted to total organic carbon or total
carbon content, based on the presence of inorganic carbonates.
Inorganic carbon compounds are mostly carbonates and easily decomposed by acidification to form CO2.
Nitrogen compounds of organic and inorganic nature are destructed at elevated temperatures into NO which is then measured and calculated to express nitrogen concentration in the sample.

TRL-TOC Analyzer
TRL-TOC analyzer is an instrument utilizing high temperature combustion technology for destruction of sample matrix
for further measurement of CO2 and NO. In TC and TOC measurements, sample is loaded into the combustion furnace
in a quartz boat. After combustion, the boat is taken out for replacement for the next sample, without leaving and remains
in the furnace. Complete combustion is achieved in two steps.
First is at operator adjustable temperatures high enough for destruction of the sample matrix. Second is the catalytic
combustion furnace to further improve oxidation of any carbon containing compound into CO2 while nitrogen containing
compounds turn into NO. Combustion step takes place in the patent pending furnace design.
When analyzing IC, the sample is placed in a 40mL vial and the vial is placed into a the IC-well.
Low carbon/nitrogen (up to 1500ugC and/or 100ugN) containing samples are run under “low mode” while higher loadings are run
under “high mode”. This is totally under operator’s initiative. Ready to use methods for high mode and low mode are available
in the software, so that the operator is free either to use one of the ready-to-use methods or to develop/modify his/her own method. Method parameters are simply two: mode selection and combustion temperature; therefore very easily set. If already set, then just selected from the list. Task definition is required to initiate an analysis, to instruct the analyzer to run “the sample”, with “the method”, by using the “calibration file”.

TRL-TOC Provides
> Both TC/TOC and TN results in a single run
> Very wide dynamic range for TC, TOC, IC and TN measurements
> Reliable results with heterogeneous samples
> No need for cumbersome sample homogenization processes
> No need for frequent combustion tube cleaning; ashes are removed from the combustion tube after every run
> Upgradable from very basic to fully automated configurations
> Ease of use for operator
> User hierarchy definitions and authorities for method selection, sample definition, task description and calibration file selection
> Achieving of log files and records
